Singapore Toy Rental’s recommendations for Top 10 (free) toys- Singapore Edition!

Let us share with you some ideas on how to make the most fun out of stuff that don’t cost a single cent!
  1. Empty bottles make the a lot of noise! (laughter included!)
Wash the bottles clean. You can find the following at home; green tea, coke, fruit juice bottles, get them in different shapes and sizes!
Uses: As percussion set, Nesting bottles (small one placed in big one- kids learn how to take them out and put them in), stacking bottles, spinning (whose bottles can spin the longest), rolling (whose bottles can roll the furthest), toss the bottles contest (the furthest), chase the rolling bottle (this one helps baby to crawl faster!) but do remember, NO glass bottles please!
  1. Empty tins make even more noise! Empty metal tins (check that they don’t have any sharp edges), Kwong Guan biscuit tins, mooncake tins, Christmas, CNY biscuit tins, Baking tins and cooking pots and pans! Wooden spatulas (think the $0.90 for 3 pieces one from Ikea) can be used as drum sticks.
  2. Boxes big and small, we love them all! Big box, small box, all the boxes!
Huge boxes from TV, washing machine, toy boxes- have you watched the spongebob squarepants episode on the TV box (episode:  “the idiot box”? Small boxes (cereal, biscuit, gift boxes)
Uses: Stacking and nesting boxes (small box inside big ones), tower of boxes, make structures, throw into hoops (like basketball), nesting boxes (box in a box), crawl inside and pretend it’s a house, bus, ship, etc.
  1. Newspaper– absolutely fun! Fold giant cranes, aeroplanes, hats, origami, bags, boxes, cut them into paper clothes, cut outs. Ever made a house out of newspaper? So fun! Use blu tack to stick cut outs onto window panes and doors!
  2. Play Masak masak with baby’s plates, cups, spoons, etc, baby can learn to self feed too! Can also bake up a storm using baking utensils, plastic measuring spoons, baking tins!
  3. Spoiled tv, radio, remote controls, handphones, radio, dvd consoles with knobs that can be turned. Kids love those!
  4. Unwanted envelopes from your letters! Don’t throw them away! Kids derive great fun from passing the envelopes through holes made from boxes, putting pieces of paper into the envelopes and taking them out.. teach them how to put (keep) stuff into the envelopes to train them to be neat and tidy!
  5. Play dress up with mummy and daddy’s clothes, accessories, hats, shoes etc. I had lots of fun with this one when I was a kid!  Use bedsheets and mattresses to build tents and houses.  Bedsheet can be put over tables and they can make their own “house” under them!
  6. Supermarkets is a very big and fun playground for kids! Try it on a weekday non peak period for maximum effect- for younger babies, pass them fruits so that they can feel texture, colour, temperature- cold. For older kids, hold a “find the item contest”, the fastest to find the object, the cheapest brand for the item (teaches them how to compare prices and save money!)
  7. Lastly, YOU, the parent! So remember to spend quality time playing with them every day! Even 30 minutes is good enough for a working parent =) You are the best toy they can ever have!
